In my opinion, teaching the elements and principles of design is important because it is in our everyday life. Art is surrounding us no matter where we look; color, shapes, textures, and patterns. Kids need to be taught the elements so they know what art is all about and at no matter what age in life you are it can still be considered art. Because I want to be a Special Education teacher, I would probably be working in a classroom with children who would need a lot more help than in a regular classroom. For my project, I would pick something easy like the color wheel and then work to move on to more color patterns.

In my opinion, teaching the elements and principles of design is essential to helping kids in the classroom with everyday experiences. We use art and design everyday in simple ways that we might not even realize. We see the shapes in the planets and the color in them. We see space as well in landscape. If kids know the elements and principles of design it can help them benefit at any stage in there life.
An activity or project that could be used to help teach a concept would be having the students draw shapes in different places on the paper as where certain battles happened. The buildings can be either close and overlapping or using vertical and horizontal placements. This way the students would understand space as well as learning a social studies lesson.

  3. The principles of design can help students look at space differently, and hopefully become more organized. On a piece of paper, a student can cram a bunch of objects in or leave a bunch of objects out and leave the viewer baffled. The same goes for the student's backpacks, lockers, desks, etc.

A project similar to our foot project would work to teach this concept. The amount of objects the students include is up to them, but they must make the most of the space provided.

I believe that it's important to teach the elements and principles of design, because they are essential tools for
conveying thought, feelings, and direction in art. Without them, the art piece is lacking structure, and can end up visually unpleasing. Without thinking about how colors can clash with one another, or how they compliment one another, the art piece can end up unpleasant.Even thinking about composition, how something is arranged on a painting, is affected by the principles, because without thinking of what goes where, it can leave a lot to be desired. They are important to teach because they are essential to planning future art works in a visually pleasing and expressionate way.

For a project or activity I would create to help teach the concept, would be to draw a still life, divided into 4 triangles, and use one concept of line, color, shape, and texture to see how each section completes the picture in whole. Composition would play an important part, because the student would have to think about how each section of a still life would look in each format. This way, they can compare them all next to each other, and see how they coincide and make the piece whole.

I think it is important to teach the elements of design because they part of our lives, its all around us, we can choose to appreciate it or ignore it but if children are exposed to it and understand the elements they are more likely to appreciate it which can enrich their lives.
Since I plan to teach lower elementary (1st-2nd grade) I would want to work with easier things such at the color wheel. I remember doing an art project when I was younger where we created pictures using cool colors then the same picture using warm colors. This really helped me remember what colors were in each group because I can visualize the pictures when I think about those groups.

In your opinion why is it important to teach the elements and principles of design? Include an extension activity or project that you could create to help teach the concept.

It is important to teach the elements and principals of design so that they can better understand the process of creating art and can understand art language. Also, In a classroom full of young children, who knows which student may someday become an artist or pursue a career in some art related department. School should be a place where students have an opportunity to experience and explore many different subjects and skills so they are well rounded individuals when they graduate and can make informed decisions. This seems like a pretty intense response but I often wonder how many
Picassos, Beethovens, or Justin Biebers have gone undeveloped because they were not provided with an opportunity to try art or music. Schools should teach the basics about everything.

Understanding art language is important. Even if the student never becomes an artist, it is still important to understand the elements of art so they can appreciate the art around them.

An activity I would use is to divide my class into groups and have each group create a quick project that represents the different elements. Then the groups would present their project and explain their element. After the presentations of the elements, I would have each student create a piece or art that represents at least 3 of the elements discussed in class.
